Desire Lines – Nervous System

With their debut EP Nervous System, Desire Lines make a striking entrance, blending progressive rock, atmospheric textures, and raw emotion into a compelling sonic journey. From groove-heavy riffs to haunting acoustic passages, the band wastes no time showcasing their versatility. But does this first release leave a lasting impact? Let’s break it down.

The EP kicks off with Heliotrope, an infectious opener that immediately sets the tone. Its irresistible groove and hypnotic melodies pull the listener in, while a sudden yet powerful progressive-style breakdown keeps things unpredictable. Right from the start, Desire Lines prove they know how to command attention.

Following closely is Wynorrific Entropy, which shifts into darker territory with eerie atmospheres and layered instrumentation. This haunting mood seamlessly transitions into Morning Is a Turn of the Page, a track built on a powerhouse combination of intricate drumming and commanding bass lines. The intensity is balanced by meaning-filled lyrics, giving the song emotional weight beyond its impressive musicianship.

Selenetrope offers a moment of reflection, stripping things back for an acoustic-driven track that reveals a more delicate side of the band. Angelic in tone and deeply emotive in execution, it might be the shortest song on the record, but it leaves a lasting impression. The transition into Imposter Syndrome is seamless, subtly building anticipation before the full band returns in full force. The reintroduction of electrified instrumentation feels powerful, creating a moment of familiarity and impact that elevates the song’s themes.

Closing out the EP is Lazarus Is Dead, the band’s most ambitious effort. A progressive journey from start to finish, the track pulls the listener headfirst into Desire Lines’ world, shifting through dynamic rhythms, intricate arrangements, and an ever-evolving intensity. By the time it reaches its climax, you’re left wanting more.

So, does Nervous System make a strong first statement? Absolutely. Desire Lines have crafted an EP that seamlessly blends melody, atmosphere, and technical musicianship without losing its emotional core. While it hints at even greater potential to come, Nervous System proves this band is one to watch. Whether you’re discovering them for the first time or already invested, this is a debut worth diving into.
