YUNGBLUD is one of the most influential and exciting artists of this era. He has hugely inspired and changed the music scene through his complete authenticity, unique style, and sheer talent.
We got to listen to the new album “IDOLS” before its release, and we can’t wait for the world to hear it. The new album is being released by YUNGBLUD under Locomotion/Island Records, the day before he headlines his music festival “BLUDFEST” at Milton Keynes Bowl. We’re expecting to hear some of the new songs from this album performed live for the first time and are so excited for this new era in his career.
“IDOLS” the album boasts a huge range of musical variety throughout its twelve songs.
The album starts strong with “Hello Heaven, Hello,” which was released earlier this year. The track is over nine minutes long. YUNGBLUD holds our attention throughout as we listen intently to the constant and deliberate sounding instrumental and musical changes. The song showcases his exceptional talent and his ability to transition between vocal styles and genres effortlessly. The beautifully created music video is linked below:
“Idols Pt I” starts orchestral sound and makes us feel relaxed, which sets us up nicely for when the beat and melody kick in. The song is mellow and optimistic-sounding. It has beautiful notes played throughout. The song showcases how YUNGBLUD has matured as an artist, which is portrayed through his unique vocals that are inviting and delivered softly. The song highlights an ode to idols of the past, with lyrics highlighting the world we live in and what it’s like to live as and with idols. The song is beautifully delivered and heartfelt, with dramatic twists and turns throughout. It is a real ballad which is monumental to YUNGBLUD’s new sound. The ending leads into the famous…
“Lovesick Lullaby,” which brings us back into more up-tempo sounds. The song was released earlier this year. It is extremely catchy and the perfect song to start your day with. We feel we can all relate to the thought process of this song and its lyrics, which are delivered in a fun and engaging way. This cleverly produced track is iconic.
“Zombie” was first heard when performed live at an intimate gig in London earlier this year. There was so much love for the song from the fans since. Dom has described the song as “A love letter to nurses.” It is a real tear-jerker, and what we feel is one of the saddest and most complex songs on the album. It is raw, hard-hitting and emotional in all the right places. It highlights our vulnerabilities as humans and is such a moving song.
The music video had one of the highest crying rates for a music video ever watched and generated so much discussion online with reaction videos circling the internet of viewers sobbing. The music video stars Florence Pugh, who depicts a day in the life of a nurse working for the NHS. I challenge you not to try while watching.
“The Greatest Parade” starts very prominently and intrinsically sounds. It’s full of stunning lyrics which are powerfully delivered and address the meaning and authenticity of life and staying true to yourself. YUNGBLUD’s vocals are hauntingly beautiful and become stronger throughout the song; the vocals fluctuate with instrumental mash-ups towards the end. The song leads out softly..
Into “Change”, which starts abruptly, lyrical. Instruments are introduced gradually. It’s a beautifully healing and very melodic song. Whispered ad-libbed vocals add to the unique, delicate, and overall sound. The lyrics are intentionally prominent but delivered gently with melodies that are constantly changing throughout. YUNGBLUD is showing off his vocal versatility with this song. It’s dreamy, influential, and consistently bracing us for the unique sounds that are about to come next, including a very high-powered guitar solo towards the end.
“Monday Murder” starts instrumentally dominant with opposingly deep lyrics commencing gently and beautifully. The lyrics are relatable and consistently clever throughout. There are melodically interesting changes, and the song has mainstream elements to i,t but remains unique-sounding. YUNGBLUD’s vocals are angelical and powerful the whole way through.
“Ghosts” starts with sad-sounding piano notes, which are played hauntingly. YUNGBLUD delivers beautifully high-pitched melodic singing. It is a gut-wrenchingly deep song with incredible lyrics around themes of not giving up. It feels like he’s speaking to us personally through the lyrics. More upbeat sounding melodies begin halfway through the song, adding the perfect balance of sad and hopeful, which gives the track a hugely wholesome feel. Unique sounding guitar elements are added towards the end with notes belted to emphasise the sound of the song’s entirety. A clap-along part at the end with catchy instrumentals will make this a must-see song live, as you can’t help but move along to the music towards the end. Large fluctuations during the 6.26-minute-long song keep us engaged throughout with such original sounds.
“Fire” starts menacingly sounding with low notes plucked to perfection, YUNGBLUD’s voice comes in evocatively in this unconventional love song, with lyrics sung to a girl alongside thundering electric guitars, which come in sporadically. Lyrical verses are clever and delivered originally paced leading to prominent choruses. The song has really interesting sounds played throughout.
“War” starts by letting the instrumental take precedence before leading into Dom’s haunting voice delivering authentic lyrics. You can feel the painful emotions in his vocals throughout. It’s heartfelt, revolutionary, and incredibly original. Vocals become more opposing and belted towards the song’s strong finish. It has incredibly distinctive sounds and is a hugely gripping song.
“Idols Pt II” starts delicately with the piano playing sad-sounding chords. This song is the shortest of the album and another ode to idols, but completely different sounding from “Idols Pt I”. YUNGBLUD challenges our beliefs through the cleverly delivered lyrics, which are stunningly sung but powerfully executed and challenge our imaginations while listening.
“Supermoon” starts with a beautifully dedicated song entrance of piano playing, while YUNGBLUD’s vocals come in low and determined. The sounds throughout this song are distinctly inspired by his idols, and this song portrays how he’s added his influences into his musical style, but also how he has defined his sound as completely his own. This is a standout song for his new style and sets him apart from other artists. The song shows his fearless approach to creativity through its full originality. It has beautiful backing singing vocals with original notes. The song is a unique ballad that’s emotional but also uplifting at the same time. It is imaginative but also realistic.
YUNGBLUD has established himself, even more so than before, as a musical idol in his own right with this album. Not one song sounds like another, and all songs are uniquely heartfelt and delivered to perfection.
“IDOLS” is a musical masterpiece that will keep you excited and engaged while listening. It’s still YUNGBLUD in all of his authenticity, but his style has matured and evolved. We can’t wait to see the songs from this album performed live!
