Galway, Ireland-based musician and producer Rory Ryan is pleased to unveil his new single ?In The Past?, the latest track from his debut album ?When You're Alone, How Does It Feel? which will be released on March 22, 2024.
Following the lead single from 2023, ?In The Future?, and the previous release ?Contently Miserable?, which entered Spotify's *end credits, The Other List and Dreampop playlists, the new single will be available for streaming and sharing on all good digital platforms from March 6, 2024.
Commenting on the track, Ryan says: "In The Past is a song that essentially talks about uncertainty. Lyrically, it revolves around feeling unsure about things. I was thinking a lot about the past when I wrote this song. It's very easy to get caught up in things you've done and said, and if you're not careful, you'll end up despairing over insignificant things you can't even control. It can also be very overwhelming to overthink things. I tried to capture this with the instrumentation in the production. There's a real sense of chaos and unease as the song progresses. I tried to make it sound a bit crazy to convey the feeling of a storm in the mind that can happen sometimes!
Ryan also recently announced his first headline show in Ireland, which will take place on April 13, 2024 at the Taidhbhearc Theatre in Galway ? tickets are on sale now.
Recorded and produced by Ryan in his small studio in Galway throughout 2022 and early 2023, his forthcoming debut album is a polished collection of songs with loneliness as a central theme. The album was mixed by Sean Cook (Weyes Blood, Matt Maltese, Hozier, St.Vincent) in Los Angeles and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova (Andy Shauf, Angel Olsen, Devendra Banhart, Father John Misty) in Ottawa.
"The album was written at a time when I was feeling very alone and quite introspective about my life," explains the songwriter. Each of the songs is a different feeling that one can have when alone. Some are ruminations and others are celebrations. Creating this album was a deeply personal experience and I hope listeners can find a connection in the songs.
Influenced by neo-psychedelic bands such as MGMT, Sunbeam Sound Machine, Beach House, Cigarettes After Sex and The Flaming Lips, as well as the classic 70s songwriting of Carole King, Labi Siffre, Todd Rundgren and McCartney, Ryan's music overflows with tones of nostalgia and melancholy that stand out against a backdrop of hope and optimism, blurring the lines between synth-pop, dream-pop and neo-psychedelia.
Working amidst the demands of his day job as a chef and having spent most of the last five years immersed in all things music-related, Ryan finally released his self-produced debut EP entitled ?1? in 2021. The album included his first single ?For You? ? a synth-pop ballad that pays homage to the sounds of the 80s while keeping an eye on the future. The song premiered on the YouTube channel I'm Cyborg But That's Okay and currently has over 450,000 views, resulting in over 160,000 plays on Spotify.
Ryan followed up his initial success with the 2022 independent single ?Keeping My Mind Quiet?, which was mixed by Sean Cook (Weyes Blood, Matt Maltese, Hozier, St.Vincent) in Los Angeles and mastered by Jason Mitchell (Aldous Harding, Self Esteem, Palace).
His material so far has received praise from influencers at Austin Town Hall, Already Heard, XS Noize, The Unsigned Guide and others, with former Kerrang! and NME editor James McMahon recently interviewing Ryan on the latest episode of the James McMahon Music Podcast to discuss the themes of loneliness on the album.
The debut album ?When You're Alone, How Does It Feel?? will be released on March 22, 2024.
