A chat with Tumble on their New EP

Metal Junkbox got to chat to Liam from Tumble about the band’s new EP “Lost in Light” which is set for release on the 2nd May.

This is the first EP released from the band, and there’s a lot of excitement around this. Liam had lots of great insight around their creative process and what’s in store for the future of Tumble, including an upcoming tour. We delved into everything from creating their original musical style to the lore of the band, the world we live in today and their musical wisdom.

I asked Liam about the influence and meaning behind the songs on “Lost in Light”, he stated Tumble’s sound is inspired by “Underground 60s/70s hard rock. I’ve so many old records to dig through that have inspired us as a band. We’re captivated by that style and that sound.” “The songs (on the E.P.) carry different meanings and variety; overall lost in light deals with flying too close to the sun and getting blinded by glory.”

I remarked as to how the E.P. has been described as “the alienation and existential dread of modern life” I asked Liam can he could elaborate a little bit more on this? He stated, “When I’m writing, I’m writing about the world around me and my experiences, and it comes from a personal place. This tool (lifting up his smart phone) becomes something that’s controlling our lives, and people are getting lost in I,t and there’s that existentialism and that sort of angle is apparent in the songs on the record.”

The song “The less I know” has been quoted to be a song about expressing “the more that you dig for meaning, the less that you find.” Liam explains it as “the idea of thought and how the deeper we look into some of the big questions, through heavy philosophical thought, the more we learn and experience and the more we realise all the experiences that are still to be had and how much deeper everything goes. The song deals with those themes and the concepts floating around in the words that hopefully listeners can get some different meaning from.”

“We’re not trying to reinvent the wheel. We have a unique voice and we’re just coming from a real place. Although we’ve looked back in time as far as our influences go, we are just capturing the moment. Our sound and style are highly improvisational; a lot of it has to do with how we’re feeling that day or in that moment, and that’s how the songs come about. It sometimes feelslike the songs tend to write themselves. It’s just freedom and letting our free flags fly.”

Liam gave us some Tumble lore also and spoke about how at their very first show- a big moment for the band, that the very first song, on the very first chord played- his guitar string broke, thankfully he brought a backup guitar and now he plays this guitar brand forevermore due to the reliability.

I asked about the beautiful artwork on the E.P, which Liam came up with the idea for. “It’s the concept of a bird tumbling through the sky, maybe it lost its way through the light somewhere. There’s an underlying theme of chaos.”

Liam stated his favourite song on the E.P. is “Sullen slaves”, he describes it as “a fast burner with fun different changes in the song and always a really exciting one to play live.”

Speaking of playing live; we spoke about touring where Liam expressed the band have “a string of Canadian shows we’re just about to announce for June. In August, we’re crossing the pond for the first time and playing live shows in the UK.”

“There’s a lot of excitement for the summer ahead,d and what the future holds for Tumble. After the tour, there are more plans for writing, getting back in the studio to work on a full-length length and then back to touring again.”

Liam stated, “I’m super excited for the fans to come to the shows and pre-order the E.P. Keep it real. Keep your head held high”

We’re also excited for Tumble’s new musical chapter and look forward to catching up with them at their shows when they play the U.K.
