The sister duo ALT BLK ERA put on an incredible album release show in the disco room at Pryzm, Kingston. The venue was absolutely perfect for showcasing ‘Rave Immortal’ in full as well as a few other fan favourite songs. Nyrobi and Chaya brought all their energy to the dancefloor and had the whole crowd jumping throughout.
Their debut album ‘Rave Immortal’ leans into a more Drum and Bass style than the rest of their discography while still keeping their signature sound and takes us on the journey of Nyrobi coming to terms with her chronic illness and her sister Chaya’s unwavering support.
Kickstarting the night with ‘Freak Show’ and ‘Even If We’re Not: Solar’, before diving head first into the album front to back and ending with fan favourite ‘ I’m Normally Like This’. They also gave us little back stories of each song in between singing them and with the atmospheric production on the tracks, it really made you feel like you were in a movie/ dream, living out the album. This album really gives you an adrenaline rush while listening as if you are the ones ‘getting in trouble with the neighbours for being too loud.’
A few stand out tracks for me are ‘Come On Outside’ and ‘Catch Me If You Can’. I don’t tend to listen to D&B but I thoroughly enjoyed both the album and the show. These 2 tracks really stood out to me as they have an ‘otherworldly’ feel to them that I find really interesting sonically.
Taking the frustrations of a chronic illness and turning it into a fun and rebellious album like this is not an easy feat but they did an incredible job of creating a relatable and hopeful album for many other people struggling with disabilities.
