Last night at The Underworld in Camden, Brazilian death metal band Crypta headlined a night of extreme metal, supported by impressive performances from Perpetual Paradox and Phobetor.
The night started with Perpetual Paradox, a metalcore band that brought their high-energy sound to a venue that was rapidly filling up. The band, with a mix of members from Brazil, Portugal, Denmark, the UK, and Spain, was already starting to give a hint of what to expect, with the venue starting to pack in early.
You could feel the heat rising as Perpetual Paradox delivered a set full of energy and stage presence.
Following Perpetual Paradox was Phobetor, a London-based band that blends death and groove metal into an atmospheric set. Frontwoman Debora Conserva commanded the stage with her growls, switching effortlessly between demonic lows and piercing high screams.
Her stage presence was great, but she wasn’t alone in delivering a powerful performance. The rest of the band provided a solid foundation, with tight riffs and really powerful and fast drumming that kept the energy high.
As the anticipation reached its peak, Crypta took to the stage, to what felt the most people I’ve seen on the Underworld, making the air conditioning work double time, and from the first note of “The Other Side of Anger,” they had the crowd in the palm of their hand. The Brazilian quartet delivered a masterclass in death metal, with Fernanda Lira leading the charge with guttural growls, aggresive expresions and intense stage presence were matched by her bass playing.
Drummer Luana Dametto was a force of nature, delivering blast beats and double bass rhythms with a speed and power that defied belief. Guitarists Jéssica di Falchi and Tainá Bergamaschi complemented each other perfectly, trading off technically complex solos and dark riffs that were getting the crowd into heavy mosh pits.
The setlist, heavily drawn from their latest album Shades of Sorrow, was met with roars of approval as the band powered through each track with relentless energy. By the time Crypta closed with “From the Ashes,” the room was a sea of euphoric exhaustion. The crowd’s chants of “Crypta” echoed through the venue long after the band left the stage, a testament to the impact they had made.
It was a night where every band brought their A-game, from Perpetual Paradox’s metalcore fury to Phobetor’s groove-heavy death metal, culminating in Crypta’s dominant performance. If you weren’t there, you missed something truly special—an unforgettable night of metal at one of London’s most iconic venues.
