Katatonia has always been a band that brings their music to fans, not just through the big-city venues, but also by choosing smaller, lesser-known locations, which creates a rare opportunity for audiences who might not otherwise get the chance to see them live. These smaller venues foster a more intimate connection between the band and fans, especially for those who, like me, have been following them for over 20 years. Their recent show at the Roadmender in Northampton was no exception.
Cobra the Impaler
Opening for Katatonia was Cobra the Impaler, a band I was already fond of thanks to their impressive album from earlier this year. But seeing them live took it to another level. Their sound is multidimensional and defies easy categorisation, blending progressive, sludge and melodic elements with a heaviness that hits hard yet still invites the audience to sing along.
Their performance was mesmerising, and fresh, and kept the crowd engaged from start to finish. Judging by the line at their merch table afterwards, they left with a slew of new fans.
Katatonia
Then, Sweden’s sadboys Katatonia, a band that has been with me since my teenage years, took the stage. They have a very dedicated and loyal fan base and this was evident on the night: the crowd was deeply invested, singing along to their favourite songs and swaying with the music in unison. It was a night filled with nostalgia and connection, with the band pulling songs from different eras that I’m sure pleased a lot of people in the room. Even a brief hiccup with the drums during “Criminals” couldn’t break the spell. For so many, Katatonia is more than just music; it’s comfort and release, and that feeling was palpable throughout the night in Northampton.
