LizZard at O2 Academy Islington, London 2024

It was one of those London evenings — cold, wet, and so miserable it felt like the universe itself was begging me to stay home. Yet there I was, dodging transport delays and puddles, minding all gaps, all in the name of live music. The O2 Academy Islington stood out like a beacon of hope, promising questionable warmth, beer, and music that would hopefully shake off the dreary mood.

Apologies to Godsticks for missing most of their set—I didn’t realise how early the gig started! From the few minutes I did catch, they put on a solid performance and had great proggy energy. Wish I’d seen more!

As the lights dimmed and LizZard strode out, my disposition shifted, and whatever had been weighing me down all day was instantly replaced with excitement that buzzed through the crowd and settled into my chest.

LizZard’s music is a bit of a wild ride in a live setting—heavy and light at the same time, like being hit by a freight train and then immediately floating on clouds. One moment you’re headbanging, and the next, drifting, carried away by Matheiu Ricou’s extraordinary guitar work. It became apparent very quickly that LizZard is quintessentially a live band. Their sound, whilst coming across as straightforward and accessible, revealed layers of complexity and nuance as the show progressed. Every aspect of their music felt intricately crafted yet looked effortlessly executed, a testament to the band’s musicianship and tight-knit chemistry. LizZard shares an intimate connection that translates into emotionally charged music with broad appeal. Whether a longtime fan or new to their sound, their show offered a captivating experience that highlighted their knack for crafting well-rounded, engaging music.

Time seemed to fly as the band moved through their set with fluidity and charm; intricate drumming provided a rhythmic backbone both precise and expressive, subtle bass lines grounded the performance, and the dynamic, almost indie, art rock flair added a unique edge.

As the final chords rang out and the band took their bows, the crowd exploded in applause, willing them to stay. Outside, the rain was still doing its best impersonation of a tempest but who cared? LizZard had turned a miserable night into something memorable, proving once again that great music can make you forget wet socks and cold hands, if only for a while.
