Opeth: Tuska Festival 2024

It seems that Swedish bands dominate many of the live shows I attend in Finland, and Opeth’s performance at TUSKA was another testament to their enduring appeal across borders. As a photographer, the opportunity to capture Opeth in action from the photo pit, situated between the stage and the audience, felt like a race against time. However, with Opeth, known for their expansive compositions and frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt’s penchant for between-song banter, there was ample opportunity to capture both the music and the moments.

Opeth’s set was characterised by their signature blend of death metal and progressive rock, a style they’ve honed since their formation in Stockholm in 1990. Mikael Åkerfeldt’s vocal prowess ranged from guttural growls to hauntingly clear melodies, weaving through intricate guitar passages and atmospheric transitions. Their performance was not just a showcase of technical skill but also a testament to their ability to create a deep, diverse sonic experience.

Adding to the evening’s charm was Åkerfeldt’s playful banter, including some good-natured teasing—a long-standing tradition between Finnish and Swedish cultures—that elicited a lively response from the audience. Moreover, Opeth introduced their new Finnish drummer, Waltteri Väyrynen, who joined the band in 2022, marking a new chapter in their storied career.

Opeth’s presence at TUSKA reaffirmed their status as pioneers in the realms of progressive metal and rock, leaving an indelible mark on the festival and further solidifying their legacy as one of the most innovative and influential bands in heavy music.
