For a millennial like myself, the pulsating beats of Pendulum’s “Witchcraft” have long been a familiar anthem, but experiencing Pendulum live at TUSKA 2024 was a whole new level of exhilaration. While I had caught a DJ set from them ages ago, this performance marked my first encounter with their full live band setup, and it did not disappoint.
Hailing from Perth, Australia, Pendulum began as a solo project by Rob Swire before evolving into a powerhouse electronic rock band. Their signature blend of drum and bass, electronic, and rock elements creates a sonic landscape defined by energetic beats, heavy basslines, and infectious synthesisers, complemented by rock-style vocals and guitar riffs.
The highlight of their set was undoubtedly the unveiling of new material from their EP “Anima,” which resonated with the familiar Pendulum sound while introducing fresh sonic textures that seamlessly integrated into their electrifying repertoire.
Visually and sonically, Pendulum’s performance at TUSKA 2024 was a spectacle to behold. Their stage presence exuded charisma, drawing the audience into a euphoric frenzy that transcended musical boundaries. Tracks like “Watercolour” and “Propane Nightmares” showcased their ability to blend electronic intensity with rock-driven fervour, creating an atmosphere where every beat reverberated through the crowd.
Despite periods of hiatus and lineup changes, Pendulum’s impact on both electronic and rock music remains undeniable. From their breakout album “Hold Your Colour” to the genre-blurring experiments of “In Silico” and “Immersion,” Pendulum continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with their dynamic live performances.
As the lights dimmed and the final notes echoed into the night, Pendulum left an indelible mark on TUSKA 2024, reaffirming their status as pioneers of electronic rock fusion. Their ability to evolve and innovate ensures they remain a formidable force in the global music scene, inspiring generations with their genre-defying approach and infectious anthems.
