Kickstarting the evening at Voodoo Daddy’s Showroom was local Atmospheric-Rock band Blank Talk, who delivered a riff-heavy performance full of emotions. I particularly enjoyed the instrumentals throughout the songs, their music reminded me of early Wallows music with their depth of sound, combined with a hint of Arctic Monkeys. A standout song was ‘Run For the Hills’ towards the end of their see,t as it filled the room with an emotional intensity unlike the rest.
Then Norwich-based Industrial-Rock band Spineless took to the stage for an intense set, full of growls, high jumps and crunchy synths. Each band member brought their own energy and style to the stage, which somehow enmeshed, creating a dynamic performance that had the crowd fully engaged, watching in awe. Some members of the audience had even made signs to show their support, which didn’t go unnoticed by the band members.
The last support of the night was another local band, Project Mork, but this time playing ‘shabba-thrash-punk’ music which combines many genres including punk, ska, hip-hop, prog and dnb into one. They filled the room with an amalgamation of noise, which resulted in the crowd 2-stepping.
Last but not least was headliners Slung from Brighton, who graced the stage with their presence before commencing their set with ‘Class A Cherry’ from their recently released debut album ‘In Ways’. The band enchanted the crowd with their catchy riffs and Katie Oldham’s angelic voice throughout a series of ballads as well as harder-hitting songs, which showcased the stronger, more powerful side of her vocal range, particularly during ‘Matador,’ which the crowd and I both thoroughly enjoyed. They kept the energy up throughout the show and kept the audience engaged by switching up the pace every few songs, bouncing between slower tempo songs and more riotous songs like ‘Laughter’ with heavy basslines and crunchy guitar riffs. The whole band had amazing stage presence and managed to create a ‘mysterious’ energy in the room with their whimsical yet heavy soundscape.
