Esther Rose is set to release her new album, Want, on May 2, 2025, via New West Records.
The 11-track album was produced by Ross Farbe of Video Age and recorded live-to-tape at the Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN. Want features appearances by singer-songwriter Dean Johnson and members of Video Age, The Deslondes, and Silver Synthetic.
The album is the follow-up to 2023’s Safe to Run, which received wide acclaim from publications like The New York Times, Pitchfork, and Stereogum. Unlike Safe to Run, Want has a more confrontational sound, with distortion and full-band spontaneity, while still maintaining a focus on melody. Esther Rose describes the album as a memoir, with kinetic storytelling and personal insight.
Esther Rose has shared the video for the first single, ‘New Bad’, directed by Anna Marie Tendler. The song is a mix of grunge and shoegaze, and the video was filmed over five days in the desert. Rose says working with Tendler was a dream collaboration, and the two sparked an easy rapport due to their mutual admiration for each other’s work.
To create Want, Esther Rose had to recalibrate her relationship with music. After feeling exhausted and depleted from touring, she considered quitting music altogether. However, after quitting drinking and finding new momentum in therapy, she devoted herself to the new material. The results are breakthroughs that tether tightly structured melodies to narratives that bring distressing subject matter down to earth.
The album’s theme is introspection and internal examination. Esther Rose says she examines her thoughts and behavior patterns in the songs, and other themes include fear and accountability. The album is available for pre-order, and Esther Rose has announced her initial tour dates in support of Want, including a co-headline tour with Twain and UK headline dates.
Want will be available across digital platforms, compact disc, and standard black vinyl, with limited edition vinyl and compact disc versions available at Independent Retailers and Rough Trade.
