Just pumping out a single isn’t quite enough nowadays, what you really want is the type of track that’s heavy enough to be used in a Saw film when they do that one super frantic Timelapse shot. That’s what we’ve been given by Wallowing & Tayne with their new no nonsense song ‘Ancient Sorcery’, and it’s out now.
Fans of any more commercial sounding metal need not enquire as this is an endurance test of a track. From the go ‘Ancient Sorcery’ pivots between some machine gun bursts of vocals and blast beats and ritualistic soft chanting more synonymous with Tayne’s catalogue. The mix is especially sharp to the point it feels like you’re in an echo chamber devoted to extreme metal.
Both acts are fresh off the back of recent material with Church Road & MNRK Heavy respectively, so the release hammers home the type of forces that are at play in the UK scene right now. ‘Ancient Sorcery’ cuts the balance between the two acts’ styles down the middle. It’s a disgustingly heavy track overall as we expect with Wallowing, but has heaps of musical artistry from Tayne designed to simmer underneath.
Both Wallowing and Tayne have carved out their own reputations on the underground scene, here they join forces to create something that’s both familiar and startlingly fresh. It feels like the benchmark for what collabs should be doing, as even down the the name, it’s otherworldly enough to fit amongst Wallowing tracks like ‘Echoes of The Outer Reaches’ but doesn’t look out of place on Tayne’s abstract rotation of ‘Scars’, ‘Erased’, ‘Fear’ and the like.
If you find yourselves on the outs with your front door this weekend, ‘Ancient Sorcery’ will kick it right in for you. In the music industry that kind of phrase is often overused, but this time it does just smack you in the face. So set the volume to max and see how your walls hold up. That’s our plan for the night.
