Scotland’s finest, Gallus, are back with a brand-new EP titled Cool To Drive via Marshall Records, and the Scottish rockers are looking to capitalise on the momentum they’ve been building. From festival appearances at The Great Escape and SXSW to supporting the mighty Biffy Clyro, Gallus may already be a name that strikes a chord, but will this release earn a place in your permanent rotation? Let’s find out!
The EP kicks off with the feel-good vibes of the title track Cool To Drive. Barry Dolan bursts into the song with attitude and charisma, while Paul Ewins lays down a solid, catchy beat that’s impossible not to nod along to. Up next is Depressed Beyond Tablets, a slightly more formulaic number that shines with a touch of whimsy. Matt McGoldrick’s swanky bassline elevates the track and helps it stand out from the crowd.
Perfect Health slows things down, adopting a more deliberate, marching pace. Sudden bursts of energy and a more direct vocal delivery during the verses provide a welcome contrast, proving Gallus are far from a one-trick pony. The attitude picks up again with Just Desserts, a punchy track that makes no apologies. With a beat that hits unnecessarily hard, it’s a clear standout on the EP.
Closing things out is It Bit, a short yet impactful track that ramps up the tempo and urges you to dance like nobody’s watching. It’s a strong and confident finale.
If this release proves anything, it’s that the rock and alternative scene is well and truly alive in Scotland. Gallus have delivered a bold and brilliant EP, possibly their best work to date!
